back to PRESERVATION or HOME
In 2009 the City of Alexandria undertook the stabilization and restoration of the cupola of Friendship Firehouse Museum in Old Town. The fire company was formed in 1774 and had occupied this building since the middle of the 19th century. The cupola houses the original bronze bell which would ring out in the case of fire. Over the years the tower had suffered the effects of weather, neglect and several flawed attempts to stop water infiltration. This project involved structural modifications, preservation or replication of period details, and a period-correct color scheme.
